The Hidden Danger of White Box PDF Editing
Overlay style PDF editors cover old text with a white rectangle and type new text on top, but the original words are still in the file. Anyone can select, copy or extract them. Editors that rewrite the text itself, like MythosPDF, actually replace the old words, so nothing is left hidden underneath.
What a white box edit really does
When you "change" a price from $1,200 to $1,450 in an overlay editor, the file ends up with both: the original $1,200 still sitting in the page's content, and a white rectangle plus a new $1,450 drawn on top. On screen it looks fine. Inside the file, the old value is intact.
Why that's a problem
- •Copy and paste leaks. Select the area and paste it into a text editor. You'll often get both the old and the new text.
- •Search finds the old value. Ctrl+F for the original number, and the PDF viewer highlights it under the box.
- •Screen readers read both. Accessibility tools announce the hidden text, which is confusing and unprofessional.
- •Backgrounds give it away. On a tinted table row or a watermark, the white box shows up as an obvious patch.
- •It's not redaction. People sometimes assume covering text removes it. It doesn't, and it has caused real data leaks.
How MythosPDF edits instead
