Every page arrives untouched
Merging copies each page object with its own content, fonts and images. Nothing is converted to an image and nothing is recompressed, so the merged file is as sharp and as searchable as the originals.
Links come along, bookmarks do not
Links drawn on a page travel with it. The outline (the bookmark panel in a PDF reader) of each source file is not combined, and fillable form fields may stop being fillable, so fill forms before you merge.
Need only some pages?
Merge first, then use Remove pages or Organize PDF to drop and reorder single pages. Each step keeps the pages themselves as they were.
