Edit a Microsoft Word thesis PDF

A thesis goes through several final touches: a typo found at the last minute, numbering that must start after the front matter, a signed approval page to insert and a repository file size limit. If it was made in Microsoft Word, you can edit the PDF itself. Word PDFs edit cleanly: runs, bold and italic are recognised, and justified paragraphs rewrap with even spacing. Calibri, Cambria and Aptos are not open fonts; Calibri and Cambria have open clones with identical widths, and Aptos gets the closest open font only with your permission.

What people change in a thesis

  • • Typos and small corrections
  • • Page numbers from the first chapter
  • • Signed approval page
  • • File size for the repository

How Microsoft Word writes PDFs

  • • Save as PDF embeds only the letters used, as subset TrueType fonts.
  • • Each run of formatting is written as its own piece of text, and justified paragraphs stretch word gaps.
  • • Tables are drawn as lines around positioned text.

Insert the signed page

Scan the signed approval page, merge it in, and drag it into place with Organize PDF.

Numbering

Add page numbers starting from the page where chapter one begins, with the first number you need.
