Why you can't edit text in a PDF
SymptomYou click text in a PDF and nothing becomes editable, or the editor reports there's no text on the page.
Why it happens
- •The page is a scan or photo, so the text is part of an image.
- •The text was converted to outlines (vector shapes) when the PDF was made.
- •The PDF is password protected or has editing restrictions.
- •The text is part of a logo or picture.
- •The PDF is damaged.
How to fix it
Scanned pages
Run OCR PDF to make them searchable. The words become copyable, though the scan itself stays an image.
Protected files
Use Unlock PDF with the password, then edit.
Outlined text and logos
These aren't text anymore. Replace the image, or ask for the original file.
