Ligature
A single glyph that joins two or more letters, such as fi or fl.
Many fonts replace f followed by i with one combined glyph. In the PDF, that's one glyph code standing for two characters.
Copying text with ligatures works only if the ToUnicode map or ActualText says which characters the glyph stands for.
