PDF glossary
Cross reference table (xref)
The index at the end of a PDF that tells readers where each object starts in the file.
Readers jump to objects using byte offsets from the xref table or a compressed xref stream.
A damaged xref is a common reason a PDF won't open; many tools can rebuild it.
