Font metrics
The measurements of a font: glyph widths, ascender, descender, cap height and more.
Each glyph has an advance width that tells where the next glyph starts. Fonts also define how far letters rise above and fall below the baseline.
PDFs store widths for each font so readers can place text exactly as the author did.
