JPEG (DCT) compression
Lossy image compression used for photos in PDFs, stored with the DCTDecode filter.
JPEG throws away detail the eye is less sensitive to, trading quality for size with a quality setting.
Each re encode loses a little more detail, which is why good tools embed JPEGs without recompressing them.
