Type 3 font

A font whose glyphs are defined by ordinary PDF drawing instructions rather than a standard font program.

Type 3 fonts can draw anything, which is why some apps use them for bitmap fonts, icons or synthetic bold.

They are harder to edit: there's no standard outline font to fall back on, and metrics must be read from each glyph procedure.
