Synthetic bold
Making regular text look bold by stroking the outline of each glyph, used when no real bold font is available.
PDF can fill and stroke glyph outlines at the same time (text render mode 2). A thin stroke thickens the letters.
It approximates bold but isn't the type designer's bold, whose letter shapes and widths differ.
