Standard 14 fonts
Fourteen fonts every PDF reader must provide: Times, Helvetica and Courier in four styles, plus Symbol and ZapfDingbats.
A PDF can use these fonts without embedding them, because readers are required to have them or a metric compatible substitute.
Their exact widths are published, so text in them can be measured precisely.
