How macOS Preview and Print writes PDFs
- • Uses the macOS PDF engine with subset fonts.
- • Fonts are often Apple system fonts.
What that means when you add a line of text
- • Letters already embedded are reused; for new letters in Apple fonts, you choose whether to use a close open font.
- • macOS Preview and Print often uses fonts that are not freely available. Letters already in the PDF are reused exactly; for a letter it never used, MythosPDF asks before using the closest open font and tells you which one.
What happens to the rest of the page
- • New lines belong to existing text blocks and follow their style and spacing.
- • Text boxes on empty parts of the page are not supported.
Questions people ask
+Can I type anywhere on the page?
Not in empty space. New text is added to an existing text block so it matches the document.
+Is it better to edit in macOS Preview and Print?
If you have the original macOS Preview and Print file and a lot to change, yes. For quick changes to the PDF itself, editing the PDF is faster and keeps it exactly as sent.
